An effort to reconnect the human spirit with the spirit of nature."
Watts' work reconnects us with nature's own processes. Each piece is a portrait of the natural world around us: trees, rock faces along rivers, old wooden boats and canoes, derelict architecture and objects all feature in the artist's work. The works are made using a vulcanized latex mold-making rubber embedded with many layers of gauze, like creating a canvas or cocoon, pressed into the surfaces of the landscape and embedded with natural phenomena (leaves, porcupine quills, etc.). This process creates an "impression" of the landscape that is then back lit, like high detail amber coloured
"X-rays", to reveal intricate and minute details of our world's body and spirit.
These works are a way of documenting and respecting the ever-changing natural environment around us. Through the process, Watts seeks to draw attention to the deeper underlying world that exists in everyday life, reconnecting people to nature.
